Let me help bust this insidious myth that merely checking your credit score online damages your credit.

• Free services like Credit Karma and Experian will provide you with your credit score and WILL NOT impact your credit score. 
• If you have good or better credit (about 700+) then you can open a couple of Travel Rewards Credit Cards, no problem.
• *Even if you think, "I've always paid all of my bills on time, my credit should be perfect"; It's always a good idea to keep an eye on your credit score. 

Opening new credit cards will actually help your credit score, as long as you follow these two rules:

1. Always pay the statement balance in full and on time.

2. Never carry a balance on your credit card. 

• The first thing a lender will check is your credit score; when a lender pulls your credit score, it's called a hard check. This type of pull on your credit score will cause a temporary dip.
• By opening new credit cards, you increase your credit diversity, and by always paying the statement balance in full, and never carrying a balance, you are improving your credit history. This will all improve your credit score.

So it's like this: 

• A Primary User is the person who's credit was checked to open the card, and who is ultimately responsible for managing and paying off the credit card.
• An Authorized User has access to a credit card tied to a Primary User's account.
• For example, you might give a teenager an emergency credit card to use. In this case, the teenager is the authorized user, they are not ultimately responsible for paying off the credit card. The parent is the primary user, they are responsible for paying off the credit card. 
• Or, if you share expenses with your significant other, one of you might be an authorized user and the other is the primary user.
